Prabowo: No Other Nation Will Take Pity on Us
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo Subianto has stressed the importance of national self-reliance amid global competition, stating that every nation inherently prioritises its own interests and thus Indonesia must rely on its own strength to achieve progress and prosperity.
In his view, excessive dependence on external parties would only leave the nation vulnerable; therefore, development must focus on strengthening national capabilities across all sectors.
‘No country is independent without prosperity. We do not want to be a nation dependent on others,’ Prabowo said while presiding over the Pancasila Birth Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Pancasila Building in Jakarta on Monday (1 June 2026).
Prabowo noted Indonesia possesses significant assets to stand on its own, including natural resources, a large population, and strategic location. However, these must be accompanied by the courage to make decisions in the people’s interest.
‘We must have the courage to make the right decisions even when difficult, and to defend our people,’ he added.
He also reminded that there is no guarantee other nations will always come to Indonesia’s aid during tough times, making national resilience a top priority.
‘If we are in trouble, if our people are hungry, if our people are in hardship, no other nation or force will take pity on or help us,’ he said.
Prabowo then reiterated the founding fathers’ message on self-reliance’s importance, stating it remains relevant for today’s global challenges.
‘As Bung Karno once advised us: We must have the courage to stand on our own feet. That is the essence of a sovereign nation,’ he added.
