Prabowo: No More Mothers Should Die Because Hospitals Are Too Far Away
President Prabowo Subianto has stated that the government will intensify the construction and revitalisation of Regional General Hospitals (RSUD). He committed to ensuring that no mother loses her life because a hospital is too far away.
This was conveyed by Prabowo during the delivery of the Financial Note and the 2027 State Budget Draft at the first DPR RI Plenary Session of the 2026/2027 term in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026). Prabowo is targeting the construction and revitalisation of 441 RSUDs.
‘We will build and revitalise 441 regional general hospitals. Each of our 514 regencies and cities must have a sophisticated hospital that can save the people as quickly as possible,’ Prabowo said in his speech.
Prabowo stated that the government has so far built 66 hospitals in the 3T (frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped) regions. He added that the provision of supporting medical equipment in hospitals is also being prioritised.
‘As an initial step, we have built 66 hospitals in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions. And today I report that of these 66 hospitals, 22 are already operational,’ Prabowo said.
‘We have brought heart examination equipment, CT scans, mammography, ultrasound, and modern services to areas that previously had to refer patients to very distant locations,’ he added.
The Chairman of the Gerindra Party said that every Koperasi Merah Putih outlet must eventually have a clinic. He hopes that the best health services can be received by the people.
‘Our plan is that every Koperasi Merah Putih outlet will have a clinic where people can access health services remotely,’ he said.
These measures are expected to resolve problems on the ground. He wants to ensure that no mother loses her life because a hospital is too far away.
‘The government will build and revitalise 440 regional general hospitals so that every regency and every city has a good hospital. These RSUDs will be strengthened especially to handle the diseases causing the highest mortality: cancer, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, as well as maternal and child health services,’ Prabowo stated.
‘No more mothers should lose their lives because the hospital is too far away. No more fathers should have to sell all their possessions because they must seek treatment in a big city,’ he added.
On this occasion, Prabowo also mentioned that Indonesia is short of general practitioners and specialists. The country, he said, still needs 84,781 general practitioners and 127,580 dentists.
‘Ladies and gentlemen, 481 regencies/cities need an additional 55,712 specialist doctors. Because of this, we have opened 9 new medical faculties as well as 170 specialist and sub-specialist study programmes, both university-based and hospital-based. And we will strive to increase this number further,’ he concluded.
