Prabowo Mentions Impeachment in Speech: There Is a Good and Peaceful Mechanism
President Prabowo Subianto stated that a government judged not to be performing its functions well can be replaced by the people. He alluded to various mechanisms for changing government that have been regulated.
“We have chosen to govern democratically, with sovereignty in the hands of the people. There is no problem. If there is a government deemed not good, then replace that government,” said Prabowo during the Government Working Meeting at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
Prabowo said that mechanisms for changing the government can be carried out through elections to impeachment. These mechanisms have been constitutionally regulated.
“There is a mechanism, in a good way, peacefully, it can be through general elections, no problem, it can also be through impeachment, no problem, but impeachment through the channels. There are channels, DPR, MK, MPR, carried out, no problem,” he said.
He alluded to regime changes in Indonesian history from the first president Sukarno, the second President of the Republic of Indonesia Soeharto, and the fourth President of the Republic of Indonesia Abdurrahman Wahid. He stated that all those regime changes proceeded peacefully.
“In our history, several changes have occurred. Bung Karno stepped down peacefully, Pak Harto stepped down peacefully, Gus Dur stepped down peacefully through the process, not through violence,” he continued.
“So, brothers and sisters, trust the system that has been built by the founders of our nation, trust our own strength, trust Indonesia,” he said.
