Prabowo Meets Japanese Emperor Naruhito at Tokyo Palace
President Prabowo Subianto paid a courtesy visit to the Imperial Palace of Japan. Prabowo met with Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his son, Crown Prince Fumihito, at the palace located in Tokyo.
The visit to the head of the Japanese imperial family is part of Prabowo’s series of visits to the Land of the Rising Sun. According to the Presidential Secretariat, Prabowo was personally welcomed by Emperor Naruhito upon disembarking from his vehicle upon arrival at the Imperial Palace.
Emperor Naruhito then walked alongside President Prabowo to the tokonoma room or reception room. The two heads of state then conducted a photo session together, followed by a one-on-one meeting.
The Presidential Secretariat stated that Prabowo and Naruhito discussed several strategic issues that are of mutual interest to both countries during the meeting. In addition, the conversation was also coloured by the exchange of light-hearted stories from each side.
In addition to meeting Emperor Naruhito, President Prabowo also held a meeting with Japan’s Crown Prince, who is the younger brother of Emperor Naruhito, Fumihito. Meanwhile, President Prabowo was accompanied by his son, Ragowo Hediprasetyo or Didit. In addition, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya were present.
After the meeting, President Prabowo, along with Emperor Naruhito and Crown Prince Fumihito, attended a state luncheon held at Rensui North, Imperial Palace. The atmosphere of the state luncheon took place at a location overlooking the imperial palace gardens.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi previously stated that President Prabowo’s visit to Japan was at the invitation of Emperor Naruhito. According to Prasetyo, the state visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various sectors. “Regarding the President’s visit to Japan, this is to fulfil the invitation from Emperor Naruhito,” said Prasetyo to the media on Sunday, 29 March 2026.
After conducting the meeting with the Japanese Emperor, Prabowo is also scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Prabowo’s visit to Japan is planned to take place from 29-31 March. After Japan, this Gerindra Party General Chairman is also scheduled to visit South Korea.
