President Prabowo Subianto has claimed that numerous achievements have been recorded since he took office in October 2024, including the successful attainment of self-sufficiency in several food commodities. The Chairman of the Gerindra Party made these remarks during a keynote speech at a large-scale shrimp harvest event in Kebumen, Central Java, on Saturday, 23 May 2026. He noted that within 19 months of his administration, several targets have begun to be realised. “In 19 months, alhamdulillah, we have achieved much,” he stated.

Prabowo stated that Indonesia has now achieved self-sufficiency in rice and maize, assessing that the national food production condition is relatively secure. However, he admitted that self-sufficiency has not yet been reached for all commodities, particularly animal protein sources. “Our protein, eggs, chicken, and meat, are still not there,” said the former Minister of Defence.

The food self-sufficiency programme, including meat, has long been a government target and has been repeatedly launched for over a decade. However, its implementation has frequently been hindered by low productivity, limited livestock populations, and a reliance on imports. Prabowo stated that the government will continue to encourage productive projects to strengthen food independence. He also emphasised the importance of managing national wealth so that it can be enjoyed equally by all citizens.

“We do not want our wealth to continue being manipulated by certain individuals or certain countries,” he remarked. Prabowo added that a similar message was delivered during his speech at the plenary session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, where he highlighted ongoing leakages in the management of state wealth. “We will do whatever is necessary to stop the leakage of the Indonesian people’s wealth,” he said. According to Prabowo, Indonesia’s wealth must be utilised to the greatest extent for the benefit of the wider community, rather than just a few parties.

During his visit to Central Java, Prabowo attended the large-scale shrimp harvest at the Kebumen-based Area-Based Shrimp Aquaculture Pond alongside several ministers. Prabowo participated in pulling a net cast by a shrimp farmer. After harvesting a net full of vaname shrimp (white-legged shrimp), Prabowo continued the event with a speech in a tent erected near the site. Prabowo noted that the Kebumen-based Area-Based Shrimp Aquaculture Pond is a project that has been running for three years. The pond was inaugurated by former President Joko Widodo and former Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo, on 9 March 2023.
