President Prabowo Subianto acknowledged that major change is not easy to achieve, as the government must confront those who engage in corruption. The remarks were made by Prabowo while leading the Pancasila Birth Anniversary Ceremony at the Pancasila Building in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs complex in Jakarta on Monday, 1 June 2026. During the event, Prabowo highlighted the likelihood of resistance from groups that have benefited from corruption practices. ‘We will face obstacles, we will face challenges, and perhaps resistance from groups that favour corruption, smuggling, and illegal economic activities,’ Prabowo said. He noted that major reforms will not always proceed smoothly, with those who have profited from corruption likely to oppose government policies. Prabowo also warned that challenges stem not only from economic criminals but also from those indifferent to national interests. ‘We may face resistance from those who lack patriotism and seek to weaken the Republic of Indonesia. But as a great nation, we must have the courage to make the right decisions despite difficulties and defend our people,’ Prabowo said. In his speech, the President stressed that the courage to make sound decisions is a crucial requirement for a great nation. He added that pro-people policies must continue despite risks and challenges. Therefore, he does not wish to pursue short-term gains that could burden future generations. Furthermore, Prabowo noted that inequality in the distribution of development benefits remains a longstanding issue for Indonesia. Despite abundant natural resources, the economic benefits have not been evenly distributed among the population. He highlighted how the added value from Indonesia’s commodities and natural wealth is often reaped by foreign entities, while many Indonesians fail to fully benefit from these resources.
