Prabowo Leads Fuel Meeting, Targets Indonesia for E20 Implementation by 2028
President Prabowo Subianto led a limited meeting at the State Palace on Wednesday (16/09/2026) to discuss the target implementation of the E20 programme, which involves blending petrol with 20% bioethanol. The programme is targeted for implementation in 2028.
“The limited meeting was led directly by the President to discuss ensuring that within the next two years, we can produce at least E20,” said the Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkiflagi Hasan (Zulhas), following the meeting.
According to Zulhas, during the meeting, the President requested that the Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran, prepare a plan for land provision to produce bioethanol raw materials, while the Investment Management Agency (BPI) Danantara was tasked with preparing the processing industry.
“For Danantara, the industry will focus on converting ethanol, which appears most feasible from sugarcane,” said Zulhas.
During the session, Zulhas did not deny that providing land for ethanol raw materials is often a challenge. However, the government sees an allocation of 2 million hectares that can be provided across Kalimantan, Sumatra, Papua, and Java for sugarcane cultivation.
Furthermore, he noted that this policy will not stop at E20; in the future, the ethanol blend in petrol will be increased to a composition of 50% (E50).
“Gradually, we will move towards E50, but the first step is E20. In the long term, we will move towards E50,” he stated.
In a separate instance, the CEO of the Investment Management Agency (BPI) Danantara, Rosan Roeslani, revealed that Danantara will support programmes aimed at reducing fuel imports and increasing the nation’s foreign exchange reserves.
“In essence, we from Danantara will always support programmes that are very effective in reducing imports and increasing our foreign exchange,” said Rosan.
Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara revealed that the meeting also discussed energy security and the technology required to support it. The government’s energy security programme will be supported by the private sector as well as Danantara.
It was noted that the meeting was also attended by the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Destry Damayanti; Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia; Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Agency, Dony Oskaria; Vice President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Oki Muraza; and the Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran.
