President Prabowo Subianto has officially commenced construction of a solar power plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 100 gigawatt peak (GWp). The project is targeted for completion by 2029 and is projected to save up to Rp73.9 trillion in electricity costs per year.

The groundbreaking for the first phase of the 100 GWp PLTS programme was held at the Java-Bali Sea Crossing Operation Monument in Gilimanuk, Jembrana Regency, Bali, on Tuesday (25/8/2026). Prabowo arrived at the event location at 15:28 WITA.

The event was attended by a number of ministers from the Red and White Cabinet, including Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan Roeslani, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Previously, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi explained that the programme aims to strengthen national energy independence and security.

“This programme is part of the National Priority Work Programme for the Energy and Water Independence Cluster, which is directed at strengthening national energy independence and security as well as reducing dependence on fossil energy,” Prasetyo told journalists on Tuesday (25/8).

Prasetyo said Prabowo has instructed that the construction of the 100 GWp PLTS be accelerated and completed by 2029. Electricity cost efficiency is estimated to reach Rp73.9 trillion per year.

In addition, Prasetyo said the government is targeting the construction of 30 GWp of PLTS along with the decommissioning of 13 GW of diesel power plants (PLTD).

Indonesia has a solar energy potential of approximately 3,294 GWp. However, the installed PLTS capacity as of April 2026 was only around 1.5 GWp.

The PLTS programme will be built in stages, namely Phase I of 17 GWp, Phase II of 18 GWp, and Phase III of 30 GWp.
