Prabowo Launches 100 GW Solar Power Program
Gilimanuk, Bali. President Prabowo Subianto on Tuesday launched construction of Indonesia’s 100-gigawatt-peak (GWp) solar power program, with an initial package of 14 projects carrying a combined investment value of about Rp135 trillion ($7.6 billion).
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday that the launch of the 100 GWp solar program at the Java-Bali Sea Crossing Operation Monument in Gilimanuk, Bali, is aimed at strengthening Indonesia’s energy independence and resilience while reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
“The president has instructed that the development of 100 GWp of solar power capacity be accelerated and completed by 2029, with estimated electricity cost savings of Rp73.9 trillion ($4.5 billion) per year. In 2026, the government is targeting the development of 30 GWp of solar power capacity while retiring 13 GW of diesel-fired power plants,” he said.
The first package includes the 300-megawatt-peak (MWp) Gilimanuk solar power plant in Bali and 13 other strategic solar projects across Indonesia. The projects are among the main developments being prepared for tender under the broader 100 GWp program.
The Gilimanuk plant is expected to generate up to 470 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity a year and reduce fuel consumption by as much as 151,000 kiloliters annually, according to government projections.
The Rp135 trillion investment package covers projects including PLTS Gilimanuk, PLTS Madura with 605 MWp of capacity, PLTS Jatigede at 636 MWp and PLTS Cirata at 1,250 MWp, alongside other projects.
Indonesia has estimated solar energy potential of around 3,294 GWp, but installed solar capacity stood at only about 1.5 GWp as of early 2026, highlighting the gap between the country’s potential and existing generation capacity.
The government has set a target of developing 30 GWp of solar capacity in 2026, while also planning to retire 13 GW of diesel-fired power plants.
The program will be developed in phases, with initial stages targeting 17 GWp, 18 GWp and 30 GWp, respectively, for a combined 65 GWp. Additional capacity is expected to be developed in subsequent phases to reach the 100 GWp target.
The government also plans to expand renewable power infrastructure to remote, frontier and disadvantaged regions to improve electricity access.
Beyond power generation, the government expects the solar expansion to support domestic industries, including solar-cell manufacturing, battery production and electricity transmission.
Under Indonesia’s 2025-2034 electricity supply plan, investment in the power sector is projected to create about 1.7 million jobs, including more than 760,000 green jobs.
The government is positioning the 100 GWp program as both a major energy-transition initiative and a potential driver of investment and industrial development as Indonesia seeks to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
