The government faces a policy dilemma with no truly comfortable options.

President Prabowo Subianto has given a one-week deadline to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, to regulate mining businesses without permits. This directive was conveyed during a government working meeting briefing at the State Palace on Wednesday (8/4).

In his instructions, the President emphasised that the government does not have much time to tolerate violations in the mining sector. He called for an immediate comprehensive evaluation of problematic mining activities.

“I have also instructed the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. I received reports that there are hundreds of unclear mines,” said Prabowo.

The President stressed that government policies must be oriented towards national and public interests, not those of specific groups.

“We only defend national interests and the interests of the people. Interests of friends, family, or groups are not a priority,” he asserted firmly.

On that occasion, Prabowo also questioned Bahlil’s readiness to resolve the issue of illegal mines. Initially, Bahlil stated he could complete it in two weeks. However, the President immediately requested that the process be accelerated.

“Two weeks? Nice, two weeks. No. One week!” Prabowo asserted firmly.

“Ready!” Bahlil replied.

Furthermore, the President emphasised that the government will not hesitate to revoke all Mining Business Licences (IUP) that do not comply with principles and regulations. He stressed that the management of natural resources must return to state control for the prosperity of the people. “We revoke all problematic IUPs. Management must be in the hands of the state, and we strengthen existing institutions and agencies,” he concluded.
