President Prabowo Subianto has invited Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to visit Indonesia. The invitation was extended by Prabowo during his meeting with Sanae, Japan’s first female prime minister, at the Akasaka Palace in Tokyo on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.
In a joint press statement with Takaichi, Prabowo expressed thanks for the warm welcome given to the Indonesian delegation by Japan. “The relationship between Japan and Indonesia has indeed been longstanding and has progressed very well,” said Prabowo, as quoted by the Presidential Secretariat.
Through this opportunity, Prabowo invited Takaichi to make a reciprocal visit to Indonesia. “Once again, I feel greatly honoured by the government and the people of Japan, and I would like to invite Her Excellency the Prime Minister of Japan, Her Excellency Sanae Takaichi, for an official visit to Indonesia. We will also welcome you warmly,” he stated.
Prabowo and Takaichi discussed various areas of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan during the meeting at the Akasaka Palace. In addition to investment, they also talked about collaboration in the energy, defence, and technology sectors.
Prabowo also conveyed appreciation for Japan’s various supports in Indonesia’s economic development. “We are very grateful that many of our young people have been given opportunities to study in Japan in all fields, and also many of our workers are allowed to intern in Japan,” said the Chairman General of the Gerindra Party.
Before visiting the Akasaka Palace, Prabowo first paid a visit to the Imperial Palace of Japan on Monday, 30 March. Prabowo met with Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his crown prince, Fumihito, at the palace located in Tokyo.
In addition, Prabowo attended a business forum in Tokyo with Indonesian and Japanese businesspeople. The forum was jointly organised by the Japan External Trade Organization or JETRO; Keidanren; Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry; and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).
