Prabowo Invites Germany to Expand Investment in Indonesia

President Prabowo Subianto has invited the German government and entrepreneurs to expand their investments in Indonesia. The invitation was conveyed during a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, 15 June 2026. Prabowo expressed hope that he would continue to play an active role in Indonesia’s cooperation with the European Union. “Indonesia also invites the German side to expand investment in important sectors in Indonesia,” Prabowo said during a joint press statement with President Steinmeier following their meeting. The Chairman of the Gerindra Party outlined several industrial sectors he deemed suitable for German investment. “Examples include the energy transition sector, downstream industrial processing, the vehicle sector as we move towards electric vehicles, and the development of the semiconductor industry,” he stated. Additionally, Prabowo invited Germany to participate in mining investment, particularly in the supply chain of critical minerals and rare earth elements. “Also in our infrastructure development,” Prabowo added. Meanwhile, President Steinmeier conveyed that the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), which has entered its finalisation stage, holds great potential for German-Indonesian investment. With IEU-CEPA, he said, small and medium-sized enterprises from Germany have greater opportunities to invest in Indonesia. Closer cooperation between the two countries, Steinmeier remarked, will benefit each party. President Steinmeier also highlighted several German companies that have long been present in Indonesia, such as Siemens, Daimler, and Infineon. “This shows that Indonesia is not only an attractive market but also a location for investment,” he said. During this visit, Steinmeier noted that he also brought a delegation from major companies. “And efforts are being made to open new paths for renewable energy, which can only be pursued together,” he stated. When receiving Steinmeier, Prabowo was accompanied by several officials, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry Rosan Roeslani, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. President Steinmeier was accompanied by Germany’s First Lady Elke Büdenbender. The German delegation also included representatives from the business, cultural, and science and technology sectors. German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste said the German President’s visit to Jakarta is a message that the country is a strong and reliable partner for Indonesia. Beste remarked that Steinmeier’s visit is grounded in Germany’s desire to strengthen partnerships with strong developing nations like Indonesia. According to Ambassador Beste, Steinmeier will also hold meetings and discussions with Indonesian intellectual and researcher communities during his visit on Monday. “In that meeting, they will discuss how Indonesia views the current geostrategic changes in the world,” he said. The German Ambassador also expressed hope that President Prabowo could reciprocate President Steinmeier’s visit with a return visit to Germany. “We hope that the German President’s visit this time can be reciprocated in the future,” Beste concluded.
