President Prabowo Subianto has stated that Indonesia is in a relatively secure position to face potential global crises, particularly regarding food security. This statement was made amid current global circumstances characterised by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.

During the inauguration of 218 bridges across remote regions of Indonesia via videoconference on Monday, 9 March 2026, the President assured the public that amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East—including the conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel—Indonesia need not worry about food availability at minimum.

“Many will face difficulties, but at least we are safe on the food issue,” Prabowo stressed.

Prabowo also expressed hope that Indonesia would no longer depend on crude oil imports in the future. This is possible thanks to Indonesia’s natural resource potential such as palm oil, cassava, maize, and sugarcane, which can be processed into energy sources.

Furthermore, he acknowledged the possibility of global dynamics that could draw other nations, including Indonesia, into crisis situations. Therefore, Indonesia must remain vigilant and strengthen national self-reliance.

“We are in a world full of danger. Powerful forces are in conflict and could drag other nations into difficult circumstances,” he explained.

The Head of State further stated that the government continues to monitor and carefully study various economic indicators and potential national resources. Based on these calculations, Indonesia is believed to be capable of facing global challenges and even emerging from crisis situations in a stronger position.

“I have reviewed and studied the figures every day. We have discovered new wealth. We may face difficulties, and I will not hide that, but my assessment is that we will emerge from this crisis stronger, more prosperous, and more self-reliant,” he added.

He emphasised the importance of national food security as a fundamental foundation in facing global uncertainty.

Following rice self-sufficiency, Prabowo also hopes Indonesia can achieve protein self-reliance in the near term.
