President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia would be among the safest countries if World War III were to occur. The Gerindra Party chairman assessed that Indonesia’s situation is better than that of most other countries.

Prabowo expressed this view during a briefing at a working meeting with ministries, agencies, and state-owned enterprises at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, 8 April 2026. “Now, if a third world war happens, which country would be safe? Indonesia is among the top,” Prabowo said from the podium.

Prabowo said he does not believe that Indonesia’s current condition is dark. The “Dark Indonesia” narrative was once the title of a demonstration protesting the Prabowo administration’s policies in early 2025. “For me, there is no dark Indonesia. Indonesia is bright while many countries are struggling,” he stated.

Prabowo gave examples that he considers indicative of security in Indonesia. In Bali, he said, there are many Russian and Ukrainian citizens even as their two countries are at war.

According to Prabowo, wars are happening everywhere at present. “Which country is not at war now? Tell me,” he remarked.

Prabowo highlighted wars also occurring in the Middle East region. He questioned where the money and capital in the Middle East would move amid those conditions.

Prabowo views this situation as an opportunity for Indonesia, which is not experiencing war. Indonesia, he said, is one of the most sought-after investment destinations. “So, brothers and sisters, the point is we have tremendous potential,” Prabowo stated.

Currently, his administration plans to build a Special Financial Zone (SFZ). The aim is to serve as a hub for travellers and foreign nationals from countries experiencing war to invest in Indonesia.

The government stated that they can later invest with attractive tax incentives and lighter regulations.

The President mentioned that National Economic Council Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan suggested building the SFZ in Bali. This plan has been under consideration since discussions several years ago.

With this zone, the government hopes that investments will flow in from countries currently in conflict. For example, from the Middle East or Russia and Ukraine, they could shift to Indonesia. Because, according to Prabowo, Indonesia is safe from war.
