Prabowo: Indonesia-Thailand Partnership Key to ASEAN Stability

President Prabowo Subianto stated that the relationship between Indonesia and Thailand significantly influences the situation in Southeast Asia. He made the remarks during a joint press statement with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

According to President Prabowo, the Thai Prime Minister’s visit to Indonesia holds important meaning because both nations are founding members of ASEAN. Prabowo noted that Indonesia and Thailand are also two countries with major economic strength in the region.

“Our economies are also large economies,” Prabowo said.

Therefore, the President considers that the position of Indonesia and Thailand as ASEAN founders and their economic strength means their bilateral relationship influences the state of affairs in Southeast Asia.

Prabowo also mentioned that Anutin’s official visit to Indonesia was the first by a Thai Prime Minister in 15 years. The President said the meeting was the second Leaders Consultation between Indonesia and Thailand after the two countries elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership last year.

“This shows that the Indonesia-Thailand partnership continues to develop and is future-oriented,” Prabowo said.

During the meeting, Prabowo and Anutin discussed various bilateral, regional, and global issues, including efforts to strengthen ASEAN’s role amidst increasing global uncertainty. As ASEAN founding members, Prabowo said Indonesia and Thailand have a shared responsibility to maintain peace, stability, security, and create shared prosperity in the region.
