Prabowo: Indonesia Achieves Self-Sufficiency in Eight Food Commodities Within a Year

President Prabowo Subianto has stated that within the past year, Indonesia has managed to achieve self-sufficiency in eight food commodities, namely rice, maize, consumer sugar, industrial sugar, garlic, beef, buffalo meat, and soybeans, as part of efforts to strengthen national food security.

“In the last year, Indonesia achieved self-sufficiency in 8 food commodities,” Prabowo said in his speech before the 2026 Annual Session of the MPR RI and the Joint Session of the DPD RI and DPR RI at the MPR/DPR RI Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday.

However, Prabowo acknowledged that there are still a number of commodities that have not yet reached self-sufficiency. One of these is garlic, which is targeted to be fulfilled independently within three years.

“We are still not self-sufficient in garlic; we are striving so that within three years we can achieve self-sufficiency in garlic,” Prabowo said.

Besides garlic, Prabowo mentioned that Indonesia has still not achieved self-sufficiency in beef and buffalo meat. However, the community’s overall protein needs are considered to have been met from a number of food sources.

“Basically, for protein we are already self-sufficient, namely protein from fish, protein from eggs, protein from chicken meat,” he stated.

Prabowo assessed that the food self-sufficiency achievements were the result of the hard work of various parties. For these achievements, he gave special awards to those deemed to have contributed to realising national food self-sufficiency.

“Today, I have conveyed special awards to those who have worked hard so that we can achieve this food self-sufficiency,” Prabowo said.

On Friday, the MPR RI, DPR RI, and DPD RI held the Annual Session of the MPR RI and the Joint Session of the DPR RI-DPD RI, one of the agendas of which was President Prabowo Subianto’s Speech for the Submission of the Performance Report of State Institutions and the State Address of the President of the Republic of Indonesia in the context of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
