Prabowo inaugurates revitalised Semarang Tawang Station, boards Nusantara Explorer train
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday inaugurated Semarang Tawang Station in Semarang City, Central Java, after the historic building was formally revitalised for the first time by PT KAI, with work carried out from May 2025 to December 2025.
At the inauguration ceremony, President Prabowo pressed a siren button together with PT KAI Chief Executive Bobby Rasyidin, Minister of Transport Dudy Purwagandhi, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, and Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi.
“In the name of Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, on this afternoon, Thursday, 30 July 2026, I, Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, hereby inaugurate the revitalisation of Semarang Tawang Station,” said President Prabowo, followed by pressing the siren button as a symbol of the inauguration.
Afterwards, President Prabowo shook hands one by one with the officials who had joined him in pressing the siren button.
From Semarang City, President Prabowo boarded the Nusantara Explorer train heading to Batang Regency, Central Java.
In Batang Regency, President Prabowo was scheduled to attend a mass mortgage signing ceremony for 62,000 subsidised housing units, held simultaneously at 165 locations across 372 regencies and cities in 36 provinces.
In a separate statement, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, who accompanied the President’s working visit to Central Java, explained that the Nusantara Explorer train embodies President Prabowo’s wish for KAI to have a beautiful and elegant passenger train service.
“This train represents the President’s wish for KAI to have a passenger service that is beautiful, elegant, and comfortable for the public,” said Cabinet Secretary Teddy.
Meanwhile, regarding the revitalisation of Semarang Tawang Station, the building, a legacy of the Dutch colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies, currently holds cultural heritage status under Regulation of the Minister of Culture and Tourism Number PM.57/PW007/MKP/2010.
The revitalisation, carried out on President Prabowo’s instructions to KAI, was undertaken by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 4 Semarang over 240 days, from 5 May to 30 December 2025.
The renovation aimed to restore the authenticity of the historic architectural facade, address problems of standing water and tidal flooding, and improve facilities and service comfort for customers.
Semarang Tawang Station was built by the Nederlandsch-Indische Maatschappij (NISM) in 1911 and began operating in 1914. The station building was designed by Dutch architect Sloth-Blauwboer, constructed in 1911, and officially opened in 1914.
