Prabowo in South Korea Attends State Luncheon and Establishes Strategic Commitments
“Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is a virtue,” wrote the philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
The state luncheon at Cheong Wa Dae on Wednesday (1/4) was more than just a diplomatic agenda. The meeting, initiated by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, instead affirmed a new direction in relations with Indonesia, closer and oriented towards the long term.
In front of delegations from both countries, President Prabowo Subianto assessed that the previous bilateral meeting had produced significant agreements. He emphasised that relations between the two countries are now moving to a higher level, not just symbolic, but also strategic.
“It is a great honour for me to be here after the very productive and beneficial discussions we have held today. The enhancement of our bilateral relations to a special comprehensive strategic partnership, along with the signing of several important agreements, reflects the deep trust and shared vision that bind our two countries,” said Prabowo, as quoted from the press release.
Prabowo also highlighted the historical similarities between Indonesia and South Korea. Both, according to him, went through long struggles to achieve independence, before then building the foundations of their respective nations.
“We have many similarities in history and shared interests. Both our countries had to fight very hard for independence. The Republic of Korea has succeeded very well in becoming a highly advanced industrial nation,” stated Prabowo.
In a relaxed atmosphere, Prabowo also expressed his admiration for South Korea’s progress, from the discipline of its people to the work ethic that he considers the key to the country’s success.
“We admire your achievements. We admire your discipline, your hard work, and your desire to always overcome challenges. I understand there is a famous Korean proverb that goes something like this: 함께 가면 멀리 간다. If we go together, (we) will go far,” he said.
