Prabowo: I Am an Admirer of Shri Narendra Modi

President Prabowo Subianto has admitted to being an admirer of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prabowo expressed his feelings during a speech before the Indian diaspora at the Indian Community Reception held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. The event was part of a series of activities during Modi’s visit to Jakarta. ‘Once again, I do not interfere in India’s domestic politics, but I am a personal admirer of Shri Narendra Modi,’ Prabowo said in his address. On that occasion, Prabowo stressed that the relationship between Indonesia and India is not built solely on economic, trade, and political cooperation. He said the two nations also share experiences regarding democracy, maintaining unity in diversity, and building stable governance. The Chairman of the Gerindra Party invited all levels of Indonesian society to learn from India’s democratic experience. According to him, India has successfully carried out peaceful government transitions despite having many ethnic groups, regional languages, and states. The Indian Community Reception served as the closing evening of PM Modi’s state visit series in Jakarta. Modi visited Indonesia for three days. He had been in Jakarta since Monday, 6 July 2026. Besides visiting the capital, Modi was also scheduled to travel to Yogyakarta to visit Prambanan Temple. In India, Modi is a popular figure but not without controversy. Modi and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have been criticised several times for allegedly promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda. Quoted from the PMIndia website, Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister born after India’s independence. He has served as Prime Minister of India since 2014 and won re-election in 2019 for a second term. Previously, he was also the Chief Minister of Gujarat, serving from October 2001 to May 2014. Then, on 4 June 2024, Modi once again retained his position as Prime Minister of India. This victory made him India’s Prime Minister for three consecutive terms. Under Shri Modi’s leadership, the Bharatiya Janata Party achieved major victories in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 parliamentary elections.
