President Prabowo Subianto has highlighted the risks faced by fishermen. The Head of State stated that the government will provide greater attention to fishermen throughout Indonesia.

Prabowo conveyed this during a visit to the Merah Putih Fishermen’s Village (KNMP) in Leato Selatan Ward, Gorontalo City, on Saturday, 9 May 2026. For Prabowo, the work of fishermen is not easy because it is full of challenges and natural uncertainties.

“I understand that fishermen face great risks. The sea is no joke. The weather can change, the currents can change. You risk your lives to earn a living for your families, for your communities, for your nation. I thank you,” Prabowo said, quoted from a written statement by the Presidential Secretariat.

He also expressed his determination to improve the welfare of Indonesian fishermen while providing them with the respect they deserve. According to the President, fishermen have often been in a position of receiving less attention.

“To that end, I am determined to improve and honour our fishermen throughout Indonesia. Fishermen are often forgotten,” said the former Minister of Defence in the Joko Widodo era.

The Merah Putih Fishermen’s Village in Leato Selatan, Gorontalo, is one of the first-phase fishermen’s village projects that has already begun operating. Prabowo visited Gorontalo after previously visiting Miangas Island in the Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, on the same day.

He mentioned that several KNMP facilities in Gorontalo are already usable, including ice makers and cold storage warehouses for fishermen. Prabowo claimed that the fishermen’s village programme will be able to improve the lives of fishermen and increase their welfare.

“We want all fishermen in Indonesia to have better lives, yes. Their incomes must increase because fishermen play a very important role in our nation’s life,” he said.
