Prabowo Forms Task Force to Accelerate Energy Transition, Pushes Conversion of 120 Million Petrol-Powered Motorbikes to Electric
Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto has appointed Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia as head of a Task Force to accelerate the national energy transition. One of the main focuses of the task force is to accelerate the conversion of motor vehicles powered by petrol into electricity, in order to reduce dependence on oil-based fuels. ‘The President has formed a task force to accelerate this, and today we were given the assignment by the President as chair of the task force to implement and translate it quickly,’ Bahlil Lahadalia said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, 5 March 2026. He explained that the acceleration of the energy transition targets not only the power-generation sector but also the use of electric vehicles by the public. ‘The acceleration of the conversion of petrol-powered motorcycles where around 120 million motorcycles are petrol-powered, we will try to do the conversion to electric motorcycles in stages,’ he said. On the generation side, the task force will oversee the construction of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) with a capacity of up to 100 gigawatts as part of strengthening renewable energy. According to Bahlil, the President asked that the implementation of the energy transition programme be carried out quickly without delay. This acceleration of the energy transition is also a strategic step to reduce the burden of energy subsidies in the state budget. ‘God willing, we will do it in not too long. The President said earlier that a maximum of three to four years, or even faster if possible,’ he said.
