President Prabowo Subianto has formed a task force to accelerate the shift to clean energy in Indonesia. The task force will oversee efforts to replace fossil energy sources, such as diesel and fuel oil, with renewable energy.

Prabowo appointed Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia as chair or coordinator of the task force. ‘The President has formed a task force to accelerate (energy conversion), and today we were given the assignment by the President as the chair of the task force,’ Bahlil said after a meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Thursday, 5 March 2026.

Bahlil said the task force has a target to convert diesel-fired power plants (PLTD) to solar power plants (PLTS) up to 100 gigawatts. ‘Because by converting from PLTD, diesel, to PLTS this will yield efficiency in our electricity subsidies,’ he said.

In addition, Bahlil added, the task force will oversee the acceleration of converting 120 million motor vehicles from fossil fuels to electricity. ‘We will try to phase in the conversion to electric motorcycles,’ the Golkar Party chairman said.

According to Bahlil, the task force will only start drawing up energy conversion plans after being announced by Prabowo today. He hopes the task force can work with thorough planning and targeted results.

Prabowo, according to Bahlil, wants the energy conversion process under the task force to be completed within 3 to 4 years. ‘Even faster if possible,’ he said.

The task force formed by Prabowo today was conveyed by the President to his aides in a meeting at the Presidential Palace. In addition to Bahlil, several cabinet members attended the meeting. Some officials who attended included Minister of Science, Technology, and Higher Education Brian Yuliarto; Minister of Investment and Industry and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board Rosan Perkasa Roeslani; Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi; and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

According to Brian, President Prabowo wants to accelerate the conversion to renewable energy so Indonesia no longer depends on imported fuel. ‘We know in the current situation the price of fuel is high, so the impact is very large,’ he said after the meeting.
