Prabowo Expresses Condolences on Khamenei's Death in a Letter
President Prabowo Subianto expressed condolences for the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, who died in an air strike attributed to the United States and Israel. Prabowo conveyed the condolences in a letter addressed to Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian. He entrusted the letter to Foreign Minister Sugiono, who subsequently delivered Prabowo’s message to Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi.
Sugiono met Boroujerdi at the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. “I also delivered a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian, who conveyed deep condolences on the death of His Eminence Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran,” Sugiono said on his Instagram account @menluri.
In discussions with the Iranian ambassador, Sugiono reviewed current developments in the Middle East. The Indonesian politician from the Gerindra Party stressed the importance of respecting international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and he underlined the need for de-escalation in the Iran–US–Israel conflict through diplomacy.
Khamenei, aged 86, died on Saturday, 28 February 2026, following an air strike on Tehran. Iran’s state media outlet Fars confirmed the death after U.S. President Donald Trump announced it on Truth Social on Sunday, 1 March 2026.
Beyond Khamenei himself, Fars reported that several family members were killed in the attack. Al Arabiya cited trusted sources within the leader’s family, naming a daughter, a son-in-law, a grandchild, and a daughter-in-law among the casualties.
Khamenei had led Iran as Supreme Leader since 1989, following the death of founder Ruhollah Khomeini. In his role, the Supreme Leader wields ultimate authority over Iran’s political, military and religious institutions, shaping domestic policy and guiding foreign relations.
The office of the Supreme Leader was established after the 1979 Revolution and is enshrined in the Iranian constitution, granting authority to senior clerics above the president and parliament.
