Prabowo Expresses Condolences on Death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo Subianto has expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The condolence message was conveyed through an official letter addressed to the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian. According to a post from the Secretariat of the Cabinet on Instagram, the condolence letter was handed over directly by Foreign Minister Sugiono to Mohammad Boroujerdi, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, in Jakarta, on Tuesday, 4 March 2026. The post, accompanied by photos of Sugiono’s meeting with Boroujerdi, said that the delivery of the letter took place ahead of Khamenei’s funeral in Mashhad, the holy city and the second-largest city in Iran. ‘President Prabowo expresses deep condolences on the demise of His Excellency Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,’ reads the caption on @sekretariat.kabinet, quoted on Thursday, 5 March 2026. Similar information was also conveyed directly by Foreign Minister Sugiono through his official X account @Menlu_RI. In the post, Sugiono stated that his meeting with Boroujerdi also discussed regional developments. ‘We discussed the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East. I stressed the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter, and the urgency of preventing further escalation through diplomacy,’ wrote Sugiono. The Indonesian government also emphasised the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter, and urged settlement through diplomatic channels to prevent further escalation of conflicts in the Middle East. Escalation of regional conflicts in the Middle East intensified after the US and Israel carried out a joint strike on Iran that killed Khamenei. Tehran then retaliated with attacks on various strategic targets in the region, including military bases and vital infrastructure such as data centres and oil and gas facilities.
