Prabowo Expands Free Health Checks and Strengthens National TB Response
President Prabowo Subianto is driving the acceleration of national health transformation by expanding the Free Health Check (CKG) programme, strengthening tuberculosis (TB) management, and improving health services across various regions to widen public access to quality healthcare. The policy was decided by President Prabowo after receiving a report from Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin regarding the progress of the Quick Win Best Results Programme (PHTC) and several flagship health programmes during a meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/6).
“Not only stopping at early detection, the CKG programme starting this year prioritises treatment and recovery efforts by Puskesmas officers with free medication and monitoring for people suffering from hypertension and diabetes,” said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in a written statement quoted in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to Teddy, the CKG programme has recorded health checks for more than 70 million residents throughout 2025. Meanwhile, in 2026, the programme has reached over 42.3 million participants spread across 38 provinces in Indonesia. Besides expanding health check coverage, the government is also strengthening treatment efforts for non-communicable diseases frequently found through the CKG programme, especially hypertension and diabetes, with free treatment and monitoring services via community health centres.
Regarding the PHTC, Teddy explained the TB control programme continues to be strengthened through more aggressive case detection. He said the number of TB cases identified this year is around 1.08 million cases, in line with increased tracing and examination efforts in the community. “The more cases detected, the easier and faster they can be treated. This year’s TB control innovations consist of integrating detection with the CKG, and a one-stop service or OSS where TB screening, diagnosis, and treatment services are carried out at one Puskesmas on the same day,” said Teddy.
“In 2026, 14 out of 20 regional general hospitals (RSUD) have begun construction, and in 2027, there are still 24 RSUDs in the planning stage,” continued Teddy. In addition to the quick win programme, Health Minister Budi also reported the distribution of 905 major medical devices to 258 districts and cities. The medical devices consist of cath labs, CT scanners, mammography units, MRI machines, and linear accelerators (Linac) to strengthen diagnostic and treatment services in the regions. The hospitals are projected to become referral healthcare centres for eastern Indonesia as well as the Pacific and Oceania regions.
Meanwhile, the construction of the Central General Hospital in Riau has reached 85 per cent and is targeted for completion in December 2026. The hospital is expected to reduce the need for residents of Riau and surrounding areas to seek treatment abroad. Going forward, the government is also preparing a revitalisation programme for RSUDs in 514 districts and cities, as well as the revitalisation of 10,000 Puskesmas, auxiliary Puskesmas, and public health laboratories as part of efforts to strengthen the national health system down to the sub-district and ward levels.
