Prabowo Echoes 'Green Century' Vision at BRICS Summit, What Does It Mean?
President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised the importance for BRICS members to transform various vulnerabilities into opportunities and strengths to build a stronger, fairer economy capable of providing prosperity for the people. Prabowo spoke regarding Indonesia’s challenges, ranging from climate change to natural disasters, while noting the nation’s abundant resource wealth.
These remarks were made by Prabowo while attending the BRICS Summit 2026 session, themed ‘Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth’, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, India, on Sunday (13/09/2026). Prabowo stated that resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability must be directed towards a common goal: building a stronger and more equitable economy that provides tangible benefits to society.
“Our resilience must benefit our people, and to provide benefits for our people, we must be able to turn our vulnerabilities into opportunities. Our weaknesses into strengths,” said Prabund in a statement from the Bureau of Press, Media, and Information of the Presidential Secretariat.
As an archipelagic nation, according to Prabowo, Indonesia deeply understands the challenges of being located in the active Ring of Fire, facing various issues such as rising sea levels, extreme weather, and volcanic activity. On the other hand, Prabowo asserted that Indonesia possesses land and maritime wealth that can serve as a foundation for the future.
“Our land and seas also hold many things that will serve as the foundation for the future. Critical minerals, rare earths, renewable resources for clean and high technology, as well as forests that breathe for the world. The same applies across BRICS,” added President Prabowo.
Furthermore, Prabowo assessed that BRICS nations possess great power because, together, they control a significant portion of the world’s critical minerals and energy resources. According to Prabowo, this potential can serve as an essential foundation in building a ‘green century’.
“We have everything that serves as the foundation for a green century. That is why, when disasters strike, we must see them as something more than just disasters. We must see the close link between climate resilience and national development,” said Prabowo.
Moving further, Prabowo emphasised that Indonesia, BRICS member states, and many nations in the Global South face various similar and interconnected issues. Therefore, Prabowo encouraged BRICS nations to face these challenges collectively by uniting their resources, productive capacities, technological capabilities, and markets.
“When we face these challenges together, we also unite resources, productive capacities, technological capabilities, and markets in very large quantities. Unite them all, and BRICS can make a real and significant difference to the world. Therefore, the first step is to recognise the value of what we possess and use this strength to help one another,” he added.
