Prabowo: Do Not Let Our Democracy Be Damaged by Foreign Interests
President Prabowo Subianto has reminded the public to safeguard democracy so that it is not damaged by foreign parties. The Head of State conveyed this while delivering a mandate at the 80th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of the Indonesian National Police, in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java. Prabowo initially emphasised that criticism is a part of democratic life that must be respected. However, he also cautioned that the security of democracy must be maintained. “Do not let democracy be hijacked by those with a lot of money. Do not let our democracy be damaged by foreign interests,” Prabowo said on Wednesday morning, 1 July 2026. For the former Minister of Defence under President Joko Widodo, democratic development must continue to be strengthened by upholding responsible freedom of expression. Prabowo stated that criticism plays an important role as a reminder and a means of evaluation for the government to continuously improve various policies. “We respect criticism. Criticism is important. We need criticism to remind us. We need criticism to improve ourselves,” he said. He then stressed that differences of opinion must not develop into hatred or division within society. Prabowo reminded the people to prioritise unity and harmony. “We are all children of the Indonesian nation. Our democracy must stand on the values of the Indonesian nation. Differences must not become a source of division,” said Prabowo. On that occasion, President Prabowo also conveyed a special message to the Indonesian National Police to continue being an institution that maintains the quality of democracy in the country. Prabowo assessed that the National Police has a strategic role in ensuring the public can convey their aspirations peacefully while maintaining public security and order. “The National Police must be a mature guardian of democracy. Guaranteeing that every citizen can express their opinion peacefully. And at the same time, ensuring that the law remains enforced and order is maintained,” said the Chairman of the Gerindra Party.
