Prabowo Decides that Appointment of National Police Chief Remains Subject to DPR Approval
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto has decided that the appointment of the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri) will continue to require approval from the House of Representatives (DPR).
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that this decision was made by Prabowo after receiving recommendations from the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform.
“The President has chosen to continue following the current practice,” Yusril said during a press conference at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
Yusril explained that the recommendation provided to Prabowo included two alternatives regarding the appointment of the Kapolri.
In addition to the longstanding mechanism, the Commission also proposed that the president could appoint the Kapolri directly without DPR approval.
Furthermore, the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform recommended that the position of the National Police remain directly under the president.
“No Ministry of Security or Ministry of Police will be established, nor will the police be placed under an existing ministry; the National Police will remain directly under the president,” he said.
