Prabowo: Criticism Vital for Democracy, Must Not Be Hijacked by Foreign Interests

President Prabowo Subianto has stressed that criticism is a vital element of democratic life, but must not be hijacked by certain interests that could disrupt national unity. Speaking at the 80th Bhayangkara Day commemoration at the Brimob Training Centre in Cikeas, Bogor Regency, on Wednesday, Prabowo said the government continues to strengthen democracy by upholding responsible freedom of expression. He noted that criticism is needed as evaluation material so the government can keep improving its policies. “We continue to build our democratic life. We respect criticism. Criticism is important. We need criticism to remind us. We need criticism to improve ourselves,” Prabowo said. However, he cautioned that democracy must also be protected from various forms of abuse that could disturb national and state life. “But the security of democracy must also be safeguarded. Do not let democracy be hijacked by those with a lot of money. Do not let our democracy be damaged by foreign interests,” he stated. He asserted that differences of opinion must not lead to hatred or division within society. “We are all children of the Indonesian nation. Our democracy must stand upon the values of the Indonesian nation. Differences must not become a source of division. We must always prioritise unity and harmony among us,” he said. On the occasion, Prabowo also urged the National Police to continue its role as guardian of democratic order, ensuring the public can express aspirations peacefully while maintaining security and public order. The President further stressed the importance of law enforcement to protect the community and provide a sense of safety for all citizens.
