Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto has criticised some political observers for having narrow-minded attitudes because they do not wish the government to succeed, deliberately generating anxiety amongst the public.

Prabowo stated that criticism and differences of opinion within democracy are normal, but should not be conducted with the aim of weakening the state.

“There are various types of observers, in my view. Some observers simply do not want their own government to succeed for various reasons. But in my assessment, their stance is narrow-minded, not patriotic,” Prabowo said during a full cabinet session at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday.

He noted that political competition is normal within a democratic system, such as in regional head elections, legislative elections, and presidential elections held every five years.

However, once the political process concludes, all parties should unite to protect and strengthen the state.

“Some observers, in my view, are motivated to create public anxiety. I do not understand their thinking either, because we are one nation, like one ship — if the ship tilts, they tilt too,” he said.

Prabowo also stressed that the government possesses various data and intelligence reports regarding various parties attempting to influence public opinion. He emphasised that the government will take action against various practices harmful to the state, including corruption.

According to him, the government currently maintains an evidence-based approach and believes that society will understand the steps taken by the government.

The President also stated that the government has prepared various scenarios to face global challenges, including the possibility of difficult economic conditions.

Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that Indonesia possesses great strength to face various crises.

“We face challenges and are prepared for the worst-case scenarios. But we have strength, our nation has great strength — we simply need to manage it as we have overcome major crises before. I am confident we will grow stronger,” he concluded.
