Prabowo Complains About Maung Vehicle: Leaking Roof and Rattling Noises

President Prabowo Subianto has recounted his experience using the Maung vehicle manufactured by state-owned enterprise PT Pindad as his presidential car since taking office. Prabowo disclosed that his official car once leaked during a heavy downpour. ‘I like to sleep in the car. One time I was sleeping, and suddenly because of heavy rain outside, there was a ’tek-tek’ sound. I woke up and it turned out there was a leak,’ Prabowo said during a speech in Bandar Lampung on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, as broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat. The General Chairman of the Gerindra Party said he could understand that the Maung is not as refined as a BMW or Mercedes. He explained that the Maung he uses is a type of vehicle that has only been produced by Indonesia in the last one or two years. However, Prabowo asked PT Pindad to improve the vehicle’s quality. ‘Well, it’s new, isn’t it? I sent it back. This is made by Pindad. I said, ’Hey Pindad, please reduce the leaks, just like that,’’ he said. The former defence minister also shared his experience riding the Maung on a mountain route. On that track, Prabowo said, the Maung frequently made noises. ‘After that, taking the car up the mountain, it went ’gledak-gledak’,’ he remarked. Despite this, Prabowo stated he will continue to use the Maung. ‘Like it or not, because I am the President, I must set an example. I must use a car made by the children of Indonesia,’ he said. He also related how he overheard several of his staff members discussing car prices. ‘A few days ago, I heard a conversation among my staff. They asked, ’Hey, how much is this car? How much is that car?’,’ Prabowo said. The retired Army general stated he could no longer participate in such conversations because he is committed to using the Maung. ‘For the sake of nationalism, I will keep using this car,’ he said. The speech was delivered during the 18th Hipmi National Conference at the Novotel Hotel in Bandar Lampung, Lampung Province, on 10-11 June 2026, which carried the theme ‘Synergy of Young Entrepreneurs to Build National Economic Strength’. The event also served as the forum to elect Hipmi’s general chairman for the 2026-2029 period, with four candidates contesting the position.
