Prabowo Claims Indonesia is Helping Countries Like Australia and Brazil with Fertiliser Supplies
President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia has successfully assisted other countries in providing fertiliser amidst global turmoil caused by the conflict in the Middle East. Prabowo highlighted this achievement during a speech in Nganjuk, East Java, on Saturday, 16 May 2026.
According to Prabowo, the conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have impacted the distribution of energy and raw materials for global fertiliser production. “It has now become evident that many countries are facing difficulties and are panicking due to the war in the Middle East,” Prabowo said, as broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat.
Chairman of the Gerindra Party, Prabowo, stated that this condition has affected global fertiliser production capacity because urea-based fertilisers are highly dependent on oil and gas. Prabowo recounted that he received a report from Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman that several countries have begun requesting fertiliser supplies from Indonesia.
Prabowo even mentioned that Australia requested assistance to purchase 500,000 tons of urea from Indonesia. “Australia asked for our help. We are selling 500,000 tons of urea to Australia,” said the former Minister of Defence.
In addition to Australia, Prabowo said that several other countries have also begun requesting fertiliser supplies from Indonesia, including the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, and Brazil. “My instruction is to help everyone,” he said.
Prabowo showcased Indonesia’s position as a country that can now provide assistance. “We are not being euphoric or arrogant, but we are now on the side that can provide assistance,” he said.
In addition to fertiliser, Prabowo claimed that other countries are starting to be interested in buying rice from Indonesia. He claimed that this condition emerged due to the government’s work in the agricultural sector and efforts to maintain rice self-sufficiency.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya previously stated that Prabowo received a telephone call from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday afternoon, 21 April 2026. Albanese, according to Teddy, expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s move to begin exporting urea fertiliser to Australia through this communication.
“PM Albanese expressed his appreciation for the President’s approval regarding the export of 250,000 tons of Indonesian urea fertiliser to Australia in the first phase,” Teddy said in a written statement.
In addition to Australia, Teddy said that Indonesia is also expanding the reach of its fertiliser export market by exploring shipments to several other countries. He said that this step is part of strengthening Indonesia’s role in the global supply chain.
“In the future, some urea fertiliser will also be exported to India, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brazil, with a total export commitment of approximately 1 million tons,” Teddy said.
