Prabowo Backed by Pakistan to Mediate US–Iran, Said to Be Willing to Accompany to Tehran
Pakistan is described as one of the countries backing President Prabowo Subianto to become mediator between the United States and Iran. The support from Pakistan was revealed by the Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency (BPN), Nusron Wahid, during a buka bersama with the head of state and scholars at Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, Thursday evening (5 March 2026). ‘The steps taken by the President have received support from several Middle Eastern countries and other Muslim nations. Including from Pakistan, also the UAE,’ Nusron said on Thursday. ‘In principle, the President desires a meeting between the United States and Iran to mediate and for Iran to open up,’ Nusron said on Thursday. In addition, Nusron stated that Indonesia will lead the D-8 forum of developing economies among Muslim nations committed to peace in the Gulf and the Middle East. ‘In essence, the President together with seven other leaders in the group of eight want peace. We must not let the conflict drag on, especially in Iran or the Gulf region,’ Nusron said. The two leaders are planning to travel to Tehran to defuse the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The news was relayed directly from Prabowo in a meeting with ulema, heads of pesantren, and leaders of Islamic civil society organisations, on Thursday (5 March 2026). ‘I am grateful that the Prime Minister of Pakistan is willing to join President Prabowo for a visit to Tehran. That is what the President explained,’ said Jimly. Jimly quoted Prabowo as saying that he had been telephoned directly by the Pakistani leader for the trip. ‘Pakistan phoned President Prabowo only a few hours before this meeting, right? He wants to go together. Oh that is very good,’ Jimly said. The plans for the Indonesian and Pakistani leaders’ visit are seen as a good step to prevent the conflict from dragging on.
