Prabowo Attends Closing of 35th NU Congress in Jombang
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Jombang, East Java, to attend the closing of the 35th Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Congress. Prabowo was welcomed by the Rais Aam of PBNU, KH Miftachul Akhyar, and the newly elected General Chairman of PBNU 2026-2031, KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz, also known as Gus Kikin.
On Monday (31/08/2026), Prabowo arrived at the Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas Islamic Boarding School in Jombang Regency at 10:08 WIB. Dressed in a white koko shirt and a peci, the President was presented with a ceremonial turban by NU leaders upon his arrival.
Several cabinet members and high-ranking officials were also in attendance, including the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Also present were Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul), Minister of ATR/BPN Nusron Wahid, Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection Arifatul Choiri, Minister of Hajj Irfan Yusuf, and the Chief of National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
Prabowo had previously attended and opened the NU Congress on Friday (27/08). In his address, he stated that Nahdlatul Ulama is a historic institution that played a significant role in the nation’s struggle for independence.
The 35th NU Congress has concluded with the selection of a new General Chairman for PBNU. KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz, or Gus Kikin, was elected to lead the organisation for the 2026-2031 term.
“The members of the Ahlul Hallil Wal Aqdi (AHWA) have decided by consensus to elect KH Abdul Hakim, commonly known as Gus Kikin, as the General Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board for the 2026-2031 period,” announced KH Anwar Iskandar while reading the plenary session results of the 35th NU Congress in Jombang, East Java, on Monday (31/08).
Gus Kikin’s election followed a rigorous process during the congress. Initially, delegates conducted a vote to narrow the candidates down to the top five. From those results, Gus Kikin secured the top position with 472 votes.
