Prabowo Assures Indonesia is Prepared to Face Energy Crisis: Our Government is Effective, Our Government is Reliable

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto is optimistic that Indonesia can face the global energy crisis amid world uncertainties. He conveyed this during a briefing at the Government Working Meeting with the Red and White Cabinet, echelon I officials from ministries and agencies, and BUMN leaders at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026). According to Prabowo, Indonesia is capable of maintaining national stability despite various global challenges. This projection was also previously stated by the United Nations through the Sustainable Development Goals agenda. “Several years ago, the UN had predicted that the world crisis, the crisis that would sweep the entire world, consists of three things: food crisis, energy crisis, and water crisis. Food, energy, and water have been outlined by the UN,” the President stated. “I have studied the data and figures, and today I received reports from my ministers, and it turns out our condition is quite safe. There are challenges, there are difficulties, but we are able to face and overcome them,” he asserted. “Some steps to control fuel consumption for the short term. The short term that I consider critical is the next year, the next 12 months. After 12 months, we will become very strong. The point is now we are ready, we are strong to face this one year,” the President explained. The President assured that energy subsidy policies will continue to protect the small community. The government is committed to maintaining fuel subsidies for around 80 percent of the population. “For subsidised fuel, we will maintain it for the small people and the poor people. We will maintain it for 80 percent of our people. But at the right time, the strong people, the rich people, if they want to use expensive petrol, they must pay the market price,” Prabowo said. Prabowo emphasised that the global crisis must be utilised as a momentum to accelerate the transformation towards national energy independence based on domestic resources and renewable energy. “Crisis, difficulties, challenges, obstacles, hurdles are opportunities. They make us have to work better, have to work more efficiently, must not be wasteful, must not have leaks, must not have corruption,” the President stressed.
