Prabowo asserts Indonesia's commitment to peace amidst global conflicts
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has asserted that Indonesia will continue to prioritise peace efforts amidst increasing global conflicts, adhering to a non-aligned foreign policy and the principle of being a good neighbour to all nations.
“We continue to strive to support peace efforts, as well as addressing various tensions elsewhere,” said Prabowo during a meeting with members of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) from across the country at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Friday.
The President noted that the current global geopolitical situation is becoming increasingly volatile due to ongoing wars in various regions. He highlighted that the war in Ukraine, which has persisted since 202 ent, continues to impact multiple sectors, including food and energy prices.
In addition to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, tensions in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, and the wider Middle East continue to escalate. Within Southeast Asia, conflicts persist in Myanmar, alongside tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
Amidst these conditions, Prabowo emphasised that Indonesia remains committed to its non-aligned foreign policy and will not join any military blocs or pacts. “Indonesia’s foreign policy now is to be a good neighbour. Our policy is the policy of the good neighbour; we want to be a good neighbour,” said Prabowo.
The President stated that the government is continuously working to improve relations with all neighbouring countries and prioritises reconciliation in resolving various issues, including border disputes that are legacies of the colonial era.
As the largest nation in the region, the Head of State believes Indonesia must maintain a wise and patient stance, avoiding provocation in the face of shifting international dynamics. Prabowo also reaffirmed that Indonesia maintains good relations with all major powers, including the United States, China, Russia, Japan, India, and Australia, without siding with any single power. “This is what allows us to be accepted everywhere,” he remarked.
Prabowo further revealed that during his visit to Seoul, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung requested his willingness to visit North Korea to open a space for dialogue. The President expressed his readiness to undertake such a role if requested, as part of the effort to build peace.
“I replied, with respect, that if asked, I am willing to go. Indonesia is considered to have no interest in interfering in the domestic affairs of any country. That is the principle we hold firmly,” he said.
The President also reminded that the increasingly uncertain global situation should serve as a reminder for all elements of the nation to remain vigilant, wise, and to maintain unity without succumbing to panic. “That is the current global situation. The global situation is very volatile. However, there is no use in us panicking or being afraid. What is important is that we must be more aware. In acting, speaking, and communicating, we must act with wisdom and kindness. We must also remain vigilant,” he concluded.
