Prabowo asserts ASEAN must serve as a model for global peace
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has asserted that ASEAN must serve as a model for global peace, while urging Southeast Asian nations to maintain unity and solidarity amid rising global geopolitical tensions.
The President delivered these remarks during the Plenary Session of the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, on Friday.
According to information received in Jakarta, Prabowo assessed that amid an increasingly fragmented world situation, ASEAN must continue to uphold the principles of peace that have long formed the foundation of the region.
In his view, ASEAN needs to strengthen its role as a global example that sustainable peace can be achieved through dialogue and cooperation.
“ASEAN’s culture of peace must not only be preserved, but we must advance it to become a model for the world. ASEAN must continue to lead, shape its environment, and secure its future. We must truly become a zone of peace,” said Prabowo.
The President continued that the current conflict in the Middle East has a significant impact on Southeast Asia and global society.
According to Prabowo, this situation should serve as a reminder for ASEAN to maintain unity through dialogue and collaboration to preserve regional stability.
“Therefore, ASEAN must become a strong and united region. We must also set an example that ASEAN is truly committed to maintaining peace, stability, and upholding dialogue and cooperation,” stated Prabowo.
Furthermore, the President said the Middle East conflict demonstrates how geopolitical rivalries and ambitions only bring harm to societies.
For this reason, Prabowo called on ASEAN countries not to be drawn into the currents of global geopolitical rivalries in order to safeguard regional peace.
The President conveyed that Indonesia will continue to contribute to maintaining regional peace through policies of good neighbourliness.
This, according to Prabowo, aligns with Indonesia’s view that peace is the key to shared prosperity.
“There is no prosperity without peace, and there is no peace without dialogue and cooperation,” he said.
