President Prabowo Subianto has highlighted Indonesia’s position as a G20 member, stating that as a G20 country, its citizens must not go hungry.

“With the right policies, which are rational and use common sense, I am confident our economic growth by the end of this year can reach 6%. But I emphasise before this assembly that for me, growth and investment are not the ultimate goal — our goal is the welfare of our people,” he said during the Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD in the framework of the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia at the Nusantara Building, Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, Friday (14/8/2026).

“High growth that cannot be enjoyed by the majority of our people is of no benefit to us… Every rupiah of investment must create jobs, must produce improvements in the quality of life of our people, especially those at the very bottom,” he added.

“That is the orientation of the government I lead. We must not abandon the powerless, the hungry, on Indonesian soil,” he explained.

“The Republic of Indonesia, a member of the G20 — is it fitting that there are still people who are hungry?”

For context, the G20 is an international economic cooperation forum comprising 19 countries plus the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU). Besides Indonesia, the EU and the AU, G20 members include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The G20 collectively represents around 85% of the world economy, with an estimated economic value exceeding US$100 trillion. The G20 controls around 75% of international world trade.
