Prabowo Appoints Danantara to Export Electricity to Singapore

President Prabowo Subianto has stated that the government has appointed BPI Danantara to implement cross-border trade, specifically the export of electricity to Singapore. “Indonesia has appointed BPI Danantara to implement cross-border electricity trade cooperation, also in the field of trade,” President Prabowo explained during a joint press conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the State Palace on Monday (6/7/2026). Prabowo also said Danantara is tasked with activities in the energy, digital economy, and digital ecosystem sectors, as well as cyber security. “We have held discussions and achieved concrete results,” he stated. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto previously revealed that the plan to export electricity to Singapore still requires time before it can be executed, confirming it will not proceed this year. The reason is that the electricity export policy requires infrastructure development that takes up to 1.5 years. “No, it cannot be done this year. Building the facilities takes at least 1 to 1.5 years to implement,” Airlangga said during a press conference at his office some time ago, on Tuesday (9/6/2026). Airlangga further stated that the government is still evaluating the technical aspects of the policy together with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia. “I think regarding this matter, we are still evaluating with the Minister of ESDM. The hope is that during the leaders’ meeting earlier, we could finalise the implementation of the MoU that was signed last year,” Airlangga said. Indonesia plans to export 3 gigawatts of electricity to Singapore. This was also announced during the Leaders’ Retreat between President Prabowo Subianto and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong last year. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia also stated that the total investment for the electricity export reaches US$10 billion. “The total investment, in our minimal calculation that we have built, is around US$10 billion, excluding the industrial zone,” Bahlil said after the meeting between Prabowo and Lawrence Wong, quoted on Tuesday (9/6/2025).
