Prabowo Appointed to Lead the Energy Transition Acceleration Task Force, Bahlil to Accelerate the Construction of Solar Power Plants and the Conversion of 120 Million Motorbikes to Electric
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto has appointed Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia as Chair of the Task Force for Accelerating the Energy Transition at a Limited Meeting at the State Palace on Thursday, 6 March 2026.
Bahlil said the formation of the task force aligns with the government’s efforts to implement the energy transition while also reducing subsidies. He was asked by Prabowo to speed up the deployment of clean and renewable energy.
‘The orientation is that the energy transition can be carried out quickly, but we can also reduce subsidies,’ he said in a written statement, quoted on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
According to him, one of the focal points Prabowo highlighted was accelerating the implementation of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) with a capacity of 100 gigawatts (GW) for schools and villages.
The use of PLTS will also be prioritised to accelerate electrification on remote islands. This step is part of the government’s strategic programme to increase energy availability and broaden access to energy services even in hard-to-reach areas.
In addition to PLTS, Prabowo also asked Bahlil to optimise efforts to convert fossil-fuel-powered motorcycles to electric motorcycles. Gradually, the government will convert 120 million motorcycles over the next 3-4 years.
‘The President is very keen for immediate implementation, and God willing we will carry it out in a short time. The President said it should be completed within three to four years, or even sooner,’ Bahlil explained.
