Prabowo and Thai PM Meeting Results: Trade Target Raised to IDR 359 Trillion
President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at Merdeka Palace on Monday. The meeting resulted in the signing of two memoranda of understanding and several other agreements between the two nations.
Prabowo noted that this was the first official visit by a Thai Prime Minister to Indonesia in 15 years. Both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in the political, security, and economic fields.
The two signed MoUs included the Roadmap of Strategic Partnership between Indonesia and Thailand 2026-2030, signed by the Indonesian Foreign Minister and Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkeow. An MoU on education was also signed between Indonesia’s Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, and Thailand’s Minister of Education, Prasert Jantararuangtong.
Prabowo stated that the meeting produced several concrete achievements, including the adoption of the strategic partnership roadmap as a guide to strengthen future bilateral cooperation and the education MoU to enhance human resource development. Commitments were also made for private sector investment cooperation, including an MoU between the Tourism Authority of Thailand and TransNusa in the tourism sector, and an MoU between Bio-Accel and ProConsilium regarding an organic waste processing project.
On political and security cooperation, both nations agreed to strengthen collaboration in handling transnational crimes, including online fraud. Prabowo expressed appreciation for the Thai government’s assistance in repatriating 1,000 Indonesian citizens indicated as victims of online fraud. The two countries will enhance cooperation in information and intelligence exchange, joint investigations, financial tracking, and law enforcement coordination to dismantle transnational crime networks. They will also continue to optimise defence and security cooperation through the Indonesia-Thailand High Level Committee and the Indonesia-Thailand Security Dialogue, and support the development of a Transnational Referral Mechanism to accelerate the protection, identification, and repatriation of victims.
Regarding economic cooperation, Prabowo expressed optimism that the bilateral trade target of US$20 billion, equivalent to IDR 359.42 trillion, can be achieved by 2030 through the implementation of the strategic partnership roadmap. Both countries agreed to expand investment, improve market access, and strengthen business partnerships, including through a Joint Trade Commission to explore business opportunities and address trade barriers. They also agreed to enhance cooperation in food security, covering agricultural technology, logistics, food processing, and supply chain resilience.
Furthermore, the two nations agreed to promote the Indonesia-Thailand Energy Forum to strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy through government and business collaboration. In the digital economy, they committed to strengthening cooperation, including the use of local currency transactions. Prabowo also mentioned mutual support for developing regional and global halal industry value chains, as well as the opening of new flight routes from Jakarta to Bangkok and Denpasar to Phuket.
On the issue of the Myanmar conflict, both countries agreed to encourage the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus through inclusive dialogue, cessation of violence, and improved humanitarian access. Indonesia and Thailand will continue to work together to encourage ASEAN to play a constructive role in supporting sustainable peace in Myanmar. The two leaders also exchanged views on the Middle East conflict, agreeing on the importance of resolving the conflict through diplomatic dialogue and respect for international law.
