Prabowo and PM Modi to Launch Prambanan Temple Conservation Project Tomorrow
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that he, alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, will launch a conservation project for the Prambanan Temple, which is regarded as a powerful symbol of the shared civilisational heritage of both nations.
The statement was made by Modi during a joint press conference with President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, 7 July 2026.
Modi stated that the launch of the Prambanan Temple conservation project would be one of the key agendas during his state visit to Indonesia.
“Tomorrow, together with President Prabowo, I will have the opportunity to launch the Prambanan Temple conservation project in Yogyakarta,” said Modi.
According to him, Prambanan Temple is not merely a historical site, but a symbol of the cultural ties that have connected India and Indonesia for over a millennium.
“Prambanan Temple, which has stood for more than a thousand years, is a symbol of the shared cultural heritage of India and Indonesia,” he remarked.
In addition to the Prambanan conservation project, both countries will also commemorate the centenary of the visit of the Indian writer and philosopher, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, to Indonesia. This momentum will serve as a vital component in strengthening cultural and educational cooperation between the two nations.
“Both countries will also celebrate with great fanfare the historic centenary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Indonesia,” said Modi.
Modi also highlighted the significant influence of Rabindranath Tagore’s thoughts on Indonesia’s national education figure, Ki Hajar Dewantara. He noted that the intellectual connection between these two figures serves as an important foundation for Indonesian and Indian educational cooperation to this day.
“In Indonesia’s developmental journey, education plays a very crucial role, and Ki Hajar Dewantara has made extraordinary contributions,” he said.
“His thoughts on education were profoundly influenced by the ideas of Rabindranath Tagore,” he continued.
Consequently, India and Indonesia have agreed to use the intellectual heritage of these two figures as inspiration for strengthening cultural diplomacy and education in the future.
“Therefore, India and Indonesia will commemorate this historic momentum through cultural cooperation and educational diplomacy inspired by Tagore and Dewantara,” he concluded.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto also emphasised that both nations have agreed to strengthen cultural diplomacy through the restoration and conservation of the Prambanan Temple complex, which holds UNESCO World Heritage status.
