Prabowo and PM Modi Inaugurate Prambanan Temple Revitalisation Partnership

Sleman, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have inaugurated a collaborative conservation project for the Prambanan Temple site in Yogyakarta. The launch was marked by the unveiling of a stone inscription reading ‘Indonesia-India Collaborative Cultural Heritage Conservation For Prambanan Temple’ at the temple complex on Wednesday (8/7/2026).

In his remarks, President Prabowo welcomed the conservation agreement with India and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for undertaking a three-day state visit to Indonesia. ‘On this auspicious occasion, I warmly welcome the agreement on the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple complex between the governments of Indonesia and India,’ he stated.

Prabowo noted that the visit held special significance, as Prambanan Temple is not only a symbol of Indonesia’s historical and cultural glory but also a reminder of the strong civilisational ties between Indonesia and India that have endured for over a thousand years. ‘Prambanan Temple is not merely a historical structure. It is a symbol of the great Nusantara civilisation that upholds knowledge, art, spirituality, and humanity,’ he explained.

He expressed hope that the friendship between the two countries would grow stronger and continue to produce tangible cooperation beneficial to both nations. The revitalisation programme will focus on 200 ancillary temples in the second courtyard of the Prambanan complex, with the long-term partnership scheduled to run from 2026 to 2036. The collaboration aims to achieve physical conservation of the site, stronger scientific documentation, improved area management, enhanced cultural cooperation, and the transfer of expertise between Indonesia and India.
