Prabowo and Modi to Visit Prambanan Temple for Conservation Cooperation
President Prabowo Subianto will visit the Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. This visit is part of a temple revitalisation cooperation agreement previously reached between India and Indonesia.
Both leaders are scheduled to visit the largest Hindu site in Indonesia on Wednesday, 7 July 2026. “Tomorrow, I will inaugurate, together with President Prabowo, the conservation of Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta,” Modi stated in a joint press statement with Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 6 July 2026.
Modi remarked that Prambanan Temple serves as a symbol of the cultural links between India and Indonesia. “The temple is over a thousand years old and is a symbol of the shared culture we possess,” he said.
On the same occasion, Prabowo expressed his appreciation for the temple restoration cooperation with India. “We welcome the restoration and conservation of the Prambanan Temple Complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site,” said the Chairman of the Gerindra Party.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that the Prambanan revitalisation cooperation includes the restoration of the ‘perwara’—the smaller temples that serve as complementary structures to the three main temples in Prambanan. “Specifically for Prambanan, India is very interested because it is one of the largest Hindu temples, featuring three main temples and approximately 200 perwara,” he said.
According to the Gerindra politician, Indonesia has already revitalised all the main temples in Prambanan. However, only six of the hundreds of perwara temples have been restored so far.
Fadli noted that the exact value of the restoration cooperation between India and Indonesia is yet to be determined, as the government must first assess the condition of the existing perwara temples. Fadli expressed hope that the revitalisation process could proceed swiftly with the assistance of experts from India.
Prime Minister Modi is visiting Indonesia for three days, having arrived in Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026. In addition to visiting the capital, Modi will travel to Yogyakarta to visit Prambanan Temple.
President Prabowo officially received Modi during a state event at the Merdeka Palace this Tuesday. The leaders also held a closed-door bilateral meeting attended by their respective delegations, followed by a luncheon.
A number of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between Indonesia and India were signed at the Merdeka Palace. The meeting resulted in 16 agreements between the two nations.
In the presence of President Prabowo and PM Modi, one of the exchanged cooperation documents involves a partnership between the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indian Space Research Organisation. This agreement covers cooperation in the field of space research.
Furthermore, Indonesia and India also announced 15 other documents covering cooperation in various sectors, ranging from defence, energy, and health to culture and technology.
