Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the Indonesia-India collaboration for the cultural heritage conservation of the Prambanan Temple area in Yogyakarta on Wednesday afternoon.

The collaboration was symbolically inaugurated as President Prabowo and PM Modi unveiled a plaque inscribed with “Indonesia-India Collaborative Cultural Heritage Conservation for Prambanan Temple.”

The plaque is situated near the ruins of small temples known as perwara. There are at least approximately 200 perwara, or companion temples, within the Prambanan Temple complex that remain in ruins and have yet to be reconstructed to their original forms.

In a separate engagement, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, speaking to journalists at the Indonesian Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/7) following the state event with PM Modi, explained that the Indonesian Government is directing the conservation and restoration collaboration with India towards the revitalisation of the temples in Prambanan, including the perwara temples.

PM Modi, alongside President Prabowo, departed from Jakarta to Yogyakarta today to personally inspect the Prambanan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia, alongside Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Both leaders viewed the Prambanan Temple from an aerial perspective via the presidential helicopter.

Within the Prambanan complex, President Prabowo and PM Modi toured the site using a buggy driven by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

During the tour of the Prambanan area, PM Modi disembarked to enter the inner courtyard near the main temples, where he met Hindu devotees performing prayers in the temple courtyard.

PM Modi greeted the worshippers before proceeding to the launch site of the Indonesia-India collaboration for the conservation of Prambanan Temple.

At the site, President Prabowo and PM Modi delivered a joint press statement regarding cooperation and collaboration in various cultural sectors, including the conservation of Prambanan Temple.

The visit of President Prabowo and PM Modi to Prambanan is part of a series of state visits by PM Modi to Indonesia between 6–8 July 2026.

PM Modi had previously visited Istana Merdeka, where he and President Prabowo co-chaired a bilateral meeting between delegations from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of India.
