President Prabowo Subianto undertook a state visit to France and met President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. Several strategic issues were discussed, including Palestinian independence.

According to the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube account, Prabowo was received with an official state ceremony on Thursday, 28 May 2026. Honours were rendered as he exited his vehicle. Accompanied by his son, Didit Hediprasetyo, Prabowo approached Macron, who was accompanied by his wife, Brigitte Macron.

Initially, Prabowo stated that Macron’s leadership is strongly felt internationally. He noted France’s firm stance on global issues.

‘In several respects, Indonesia and France share similar positions. Our bilateral relations are currently strong, thanks directly to President Macron’s support,’ he said.

Middle East Conflict

Prabowo affirmed his agreement with Macron on Middle East stability. He noted that conflicts in the region directly impact global energy conditions.

‘I agree with President Macron that Middle East stability is crucial and directly affects global energy and supply chains. Therefore, peace in the Middle East is a shared interest,’ he said.

Palestinian Independence

Prabowo highlighted France’s role as a pioneer in urging European and Western nations to support a two-state solution for Palestinian independence. He stated Indonesia shares this stance.

‘I am pleased that France is among the pioneers encouraging European and Western countries to back a two-state solution for Palestinian independence. Indonesia remains of the view that there can be no Middle East peace without a two-state solution and justice for Palestinians,’ he said.

Macron reciprocated by praising Prabowo’s firm stance on Palestine.

‘I wish to pay tribute to your role, your friendship, and the courageous stance you took last year for Middle East peace, including your support for Palestinian recognition,’ Macron said.

Macron assessed that Indonesia and France share aligned visions in maintaining regional stability and promoting peaceful resolutions to international conflicts.

Defence and Education

Prabowo stated the meeting covered key issues, including defence cooperation, clean energy, education, research, and the implementation of the Indonesia-European Union CEPA agreement. He thanked Macron for supporting the acceleration of these developments.

‘We aim to enhance cooperation, boost mutual investment, and I am delighted with the establishment of the France-Indonesia High Level Business Council, which I consider very important,’ he said.

‘We welcome French companies’ participation in Indonesia’s economy. As a European leader, France will continue to play a significant role in Southeast Asia,’ he added.

Grand Croix Honour

Prabowo attended a state dinner hosted by Macron at the Salle des Fêtes in the Élysée Palace, wearing the Grand Croix de la Légion d’Honneur award presented by Macron in 2025 in Magelang.

The Grand Croix de la Légion d’Honneur is France’s highest honour, recognising exceptional service to the nation. It is awarded only to individuals deemed to have made significant contributions, whether civilian or military.

According to the Presidential Secretariat, the state dinner was held in a warm atmosphere, symbolising the strengthening diplomatic ties between Indonesia and France. The leaders’ meeting is expected to further solidify bilateral collaboration in defence, economy, culture, education, and other global partnerships.
