Prabowo and Lawrence Wong Agree Malacca Strait Open to All Nations

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong have affirmed that the Malacca Strait will remain open and accessible to all countries as a trade route. This was revealed following a Leader’s Retreat meeting in Jakarta on Monday (6/7/2026).

During the meeting, Prabowo and Wong discussed the Malacca Strait, which borders both nations. President Prabowo emphasised that the strait is open and can be accessed by any country.

‘Indonesia and Singapore share a direct border along the Malacca Strait. We have a vested interest in maintaining the Malacca Strait as a free passage for all parties,’ he stated.

Prabowo added that both countries must maintain security in the strait, safeguarding it from ship accidents and the threat of piracy. He also noted ongoing coordination with Malaysia and Thailand on this matter, in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

‘The Malacca Strait will always be open, safe, and accessible to anyone who needs passage,’ he said.

On the same occasion, Prime Minister Wong observed that Singapore and Indonesia share strategic interests in the Malacca Strait. This includes a mutual interest in upholding the rights and freedom of navigation and ensuring the international shipping lane remains open to all parties, consistent with the 1982 UNCLOS.
