Prabowo and Indian PM Modi's Agenda at Prambanan Temple Today

President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to visit Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta today, Wednesday, 8 July 2026. The visit by the two leaders is part of a temple revitalisation cooperation agreement between Indonesia and India. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi revealed that Prabowo and Modi are scheduled to depart for Yogyakarta this morning to visit the largest Hindu site in Indonesia. During the visit, one of the agendas for President Prabowo and Prime Minister Modi is the signing of a cooperation agreement for the conservation of Prambanan Temple. ‘In addition, Prime Minister Modi will also take time to perform worship at the Prambanan Temple complex,’ Prasetyo told the media on Wednesday. PM Modi is visiting Indonesia for three days. He has been in Jakarta since Monday, 6 July 2026. President Prabowo officially received Modi at a state ceremony at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. They also held a closed bilateral meeting followed by their respective delegations and a luncheon together. A number of strategic memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Indonesia and India were signed at the Merdeka Palace. The meeting resulted in 16 agreements between the two countries. Besides visiting the capital, Modi is also scheduled to travel to Yogyakarta. Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Shri Sandeep Chakravorty stated that the visit to Yogyakarta is related to the two countries’ agreement to support the restoration of Prambanan Temple as outlined in the 2025 Indonesia-India Joint Statement. ‘Regarding Yogyakarta, he is visiting because, if you look at the 2025 Joint Statement, the two leaders (India and Indonesia) agreed that India would support the restoration of Prambanan Temple,’ he said on Friday, 3 July 2026. According to Chakravorty, since the joint statement was issued, the Indian government has been working with Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture, the Indonesian Heritage Institute, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to strengthen the temple restoration plan. Chakravorty explained that the ASI is an institution with expertise in restoring ancient temples and monuments. The institution was previously involved in the restoration of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and is currently working on similar projects in Laos and Vietnam. He said an ASI team has conducted a direct review of Prambanan Temple and compiled a project report that is currently under evaluation. ‘The ASI team has come to Indonesia, reviewed the temple, and compiled a project report which is currently in the evaluation stage. We believe that when the two leaders meet, they will announce the commencement of the temple restoration work,’ he said. Chakravorty assessed that the restoration of Prambanan Temple has the potential to strengthen Yogyakarta’s tourism appeal while attracting more foreign tourists, including from India. According to him, the restoration is also part of efforts to develop other tourist destinations in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon conveyed that the Prambanan Temple revitalisation cooperation includes the restoration of the perwara, or smaller complementary temples. ‘Especially for Prambanan, India is very interested because this is one of the largest Hindu temples, with 3 main temples and around 200 perwara,’ he said at the Merdeka Palace complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. According to the Gerindra politician, Indonesia has already revitalised all the main temples at Prambanan. However, only six of the hundreds of perwara temples have been restored so far. Fadli said he did not yet know the value of the restoration cooperation between India and Indonesia. He explained that the government still needs to assess the condition of the perwara temples at Prambanan. Fadli expressed hope that the revitalisation process could proceed quickly with the assistance of experts from India.
