Prabowo and Indian PM Modi to Visit Prambanan Temple Today, Launch Revitalisation Project

President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to visit the Prambanan Temple today to inspect the structure and launch a revitalisation project. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya confirmed the visit, stating that the two leaders would tour the globally recognised 9th-century cultural heritage site, which is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia. Prime Minister Modi previously announced the joint inauguration during a press conference with President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace, describing Prambanan as a symbol of the shared culture and civilisational links between Indonesia and India. President Prabowo welcomed the restoration and conservation cooperation for the UNESCO World Heritage site. He also appreciated the designation of the Tagore-Dewantara Year, commemorating the historic 1927 meeting between philosopher Rabindranath Tagore and Ki Hajar Dewantara, which fostered educational and cultural exchanges between the two nations. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon revealed that the revitalisation project, proposed by Modi a year and a half ago, will focus on the smaller ‘perwara’ temples within the complex. Of the approximately 200 perwara temples, only six have been revitalised so far, while the three main temples have already been completed. The Indian government’s interest in supporting the restoration of this major Hindu temple complex reflects the strong cultural diplomacy between the two countries.
