Prabowo and Indian PM Modi Inaugurate Prambanan Temple Restoration Project Amid Enthusiastic Crowds

The visit of President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Prambanan Temple drew the attention of the public. Both Indonesian and Indian citizens enthusiastically welcomed the two leaders. They gathered to greet Prabowo and PM Modi, with some Indian nationals waving their country’s flags while shouting out to the leaders. At the site of the inauguration for the collaborative conservation and restoration project, the crowd’s excitement was palpable. After the ceremony, Prabowo and PM Modi descended from the podium to greet the public, waving and occasionally accepting requests for selfies. The leaders had earlier toured the Prambanan Temple complex before inaugurating the ‘Indonesia-India Collaborative Cultural Heritage Conservation’ project by unveiling a plaque. This long-term restoration programme, scheduled from 2026 to 2036, will focus on the restoration of more than 200 perwara temples in the second courtyard, most of which currently lie in ruins. The project will employ modern technology, including LiDAR surveys, artificial intelligence-based digital reconstruction, and digital documentation, using the anastylosis method.
